Securing Your Apartment

Many of us live in an apartment environment.  You have all the amenities without having the responsibilities of being a homeowner.  That being said, you should take extra precaution when it comes to your personal safety.  Chances are you aren’t the only one with access to the premises thus increasing your risks of safety.  Protecting yourself should be a major concern.

Never open your door to just anyone especially if you aren’t expecting someone.  If there isn’t a peephole in your door entry, ask that one be installed.  This way you can see who is on the other side before you open the door.  Always keep your door locks locked, if the door has a chain-type lock make sure you have it in the locked position also, this can help in the event the door is forced open on you.  Deadbolt locks are crucial, if you don’t have one on your door ask the landlord to install one for you.  Remember someone lived there before you, can you trust that the locks were changed prior to you moving in?  Remember to always use all these locks.

Burglary Prevention.  Burglaries for the most part occur during the day between the hours of 9am and 3pm when most people are at work.  Gaining access to the apartment is usually done through an unlocked door or window.  Always lock your doors and windows.  You may want to have a wireless alarm installed for added protection.  These alarms omit a loud sounding alarm which will hopefully deter the burglar away from your apartment.  Wireless sensors can also be installed on all of the windows, without damaging window frames.

Sliding Glass Alarms.  Burglar entry is very popular through sliding glass doors and sliding windows.  Always place a rod or bar of some type so these cannot be opened.  You can also get a sliding glass door alarm that will sound off and alert you or anyone nearby to the presence of an intruder.

Glass Breakage Alarm.  Glass Breakage alarms are designed to omit when the glass to the window or door has been broken.  These items are easy to install and can deter an intruder from going any further within the break-in.

Door Stop Alarms Door stop alarms are also great that they also omit a loud sounding alarm.  They will activate when the door is opened.  This alarm is ideal for anyone who lives in an apartment, especially when you are alone.

It’s very important when choosing an apartment you take all this into consideration.  You want to pick a safer neighborhood environment, that it has well-lit parking.  Meet with a few neighbors; get to know them so if an emergency arises you can turn to them if needed.  Investing in home security products for your apartment is wise.  Make sure you stay on your toes and pay close attention to your surroundings so you don’t become an obvious target for a burglar or intruder!
