Helpful Prevention Tips for Car Theft

Stealing cars is an easy opportunity for the common criminal so making your vehicle difficult for them can help in the end results.

Nowadays one should never leave their vehicle unlocked, even if you are just running into the gas station store for one minute.  You should also make sure your windows are up; as these two things are the first items the thief will look for prior to taking the vehicle.  Under no circumstances should you leave your keys in the car, nor should you leave a child, friend, family member in the vehicle with the keys in the ignition.  You will not only have lost your vehicle you have now lost your loved one too.

Most luxury vehicles today come with alarm systems, but are the factory installed alarm enough?  You may want to invest in other security devices as OnStar, GPS or a Lojack tracking system. These will help protect your car, or aid in the recovery of a vehicle if it is stolen.

Keep the inside of your car as clean and free from personal belongings or anything of value as possible.  Keeping personal property inside the vehicle is an open invitation to take it.  Always store any packages you have purchased in the trunk until it can be brought inside your home.

Always park in a very well lit area when possible and where there are many other vehicles and traffic.  Criminals don’t want to be the center of attention and do prefer the vehicle parked in an isolated area where they probably won’t be seen.

Carjack Prevention

Carjacks has become vastly in the US. To avoid becoming a victim of carjacking you need to pay very close attention to your surroundings at all times.  Criminals use the element of surprise, and they will watch for that person who is not paying attention and not notice until it is too late. When stopping at a red light or stop sign look around and make yourself aware of anyone walking near your vehicle.  Rule of thumb is to leave enough space between your front bumper and the car ahead of you to make so you can make an emergency exit if necessary.

Watch out for scams that criminals may use as boxing in your car with other vehicles so you cannot drive away, or intentionally hitting your vehicle to make you get out.  Car thieves will create an accident, you get out and they jump in.

If you become a victim of a carjacking, the most important issue is your own safety.  You don’t want to chance that the criminal has a gun or another type of weapon, and willing to use it to get what they want. Just give up the car to stay safe.

Upon your vehicle being carjacked, immediately call the police.  Give them as much information as you can, such as the VIN number, license plate, make and model and color.  This can help them to find your vehicle, and establish a pattern of car thefts that may have occurred in the area.
